Winter Olympics – Ice Hockey Injuries – Ice Hockey Player Suffers Serious Head Injury

A Slovakian ice hockey player, Lubos Bartecko has suffered a serious head injury, after being struck in the playoffs. In the first period of play he collapsed to the ice after being hit by Ole Kristian Tollefsen from Norway.
It seems as though on being struck by Tollefsen’s elbow, Bartecko’s helmet came off and another Norwegian player Tore Vikingstad ran into him. Unfortunately he then had no protection for his head as he plummeted onto the ice.
When Bartecko raised his head from the ice momentarily, a pool of blood could be clearly seen. He then lay motionless and was stretchered away. The game had to be stopped so that the blood stain could be scoured from the ice.
Bartecko, aged 33 spent 5 seasons in the NHL between 1997 and 2003, and was also in the Slovakian team that won the world championship in 2002.
